Breath of Life for London’s Waterways
British Waterways (BW) has appointed specialist contractor Land & Water to play a major role in a £1.6m initiative to revive commercial traffic on west London canals.

Funded by BW and Transport for London, the scheme’s one of several key infrastructure projects planned to create an environmentally sustainable alternative to road haulage through the congested capital.

Land & Water’s £1m contract involves dredging bridge holes and problem areas to accommodate freight barges and to improve canal infrastructure for existing users. Additional works funded by the initiative include:

• A new £106,000 canal turning point at Stockley Park near West Drayton
• A new £304,000 canal wharf at Willesden Junction, to serve a planned recycling centre
• A £104,000 study of the freight potential of west London’s canal network, including business opportunities, locations for modern wharf sites and other recommendations for reviving commercial canal traffic
