Our History - Land and Water

Our History

Land & Water was founded by Richard Melhuish and Robert Hindley Jones in the late 1960’s. As early adopters of the very first long reach excavators, by the mid 1970s they were designing and maintaining lakes and waterways with Hymac 580 BT and 580C long reach machines. In the nearly four decades since then, Land & Water has pursued a passion and built an impeccable reputation to excel in the environment where, quite literally, land and water meet.

Richard Maclean has been the Director of Land & Water Plant Hire for over 25 years:

“By the time I started driving long reach machines in the early 90s there were around 5 machines in the fleet.

As the business expanded, so too did our passion for innovation and continuous improvement. We started working with a design engineer to draw up our own long reach arms because at that time, the machines we required were just not available elsewhere. The fleet and the business continued to grow steadily from its early grass roots.

The world has changed and so have we; we now have the largest and most extensive fleet of long reach excavators available for hire.

All our plant is now sourced from the original equipment manufacturers and is owned, managed and maintained to the very highest standards that our customers expect and deserve.

Our fleet however isn’t just about the long reach excavator. I am proud to say that we also have the UK’s most extensive fleet of specialist and inland marine equipment.

In over 25 years of working at Land & Water I am yet to find a job where we were unable to provide the equipment to solve our customer’s needs.

Our marketplace does not stand still. Legislation gets ever stricter, while price, quality and market forces ensure we continually introduce safer, greener, faster and more cost effective solutions to our customer’s needs.

Innovation is our passion and asking our customers what we could do even better helps with that process. We are equally as open with our equipment manufacturers which is how we shape the machines of the future.

We have of course built up a healthy bank of knowledge and experience from which you will benefit should you choose to work with us. Our advice is free and impartial, along with our site visits which may be required for more complicated activities.

And finally – there’s our team. Our business simply would not be what it is today without our people. From the front end hire specialists to the skilled maintenance engineers through to the back office team and managers, every single person strives to ensure we offer the very best level of service to all.
