From large dredging projects to smaller civil engineering projects, from private client works to frameworks, Estimator Luke Martin has seen the full scope of Land & Water’s services since joining the company in June last year and this is one of his favourite parts of the job.
Luke recently told us, “I love the variety of the different schemes I work on. I can go from a large civil job followed by a project with limited access to plant. It keeps you on your toes and makes every day different.”
As an Estimator, Luke carries out a range of tasks from providing budget on future schemes to competitively tendering against other contractors which includes pricing, producing a written quality bid and providing a construction programme for the client.
Luke has recently been working on a scheme in the South West which involves the construction of two eel passes and fencing work. Working closely with a designer to construct the eel pass was incredibly important as one of the sites was confined with limited access. This meant that Luke priced for a specialist team with oxygen tanks, gas monitors and more to ensure safety was paramount.
Luke said: “I found this project extremely interesting because, working closely with my team, we had to identify the safest, most efficient and economical way to construct and win this tender.”
Another part of his role is to complete a carbon calculator for the tender. As a company which is committed to delivering, maintain and sustaining the UK’s natural capital where land and water meet, safeguarding the planet through using sustainable solutions is incredibly important to us. The carbon calculator allows us to understand how much carbon we may potentially be producing on a project so that we can make more environmentally conscious decisions. This includes looking to use HVO fuel, which is 90+% carbon neutral, or FCS hardwood. Luke also regularly attends industry discussions because as a company we believe it’s important that contractors within the construction and civil engineering sectors work together to reduce emissions.
Within less than a year Luke has fully immersed himself into his role and amongst his fellow peers. He said, “One of the things I enjoy most about my job is the people around me. I only joined last year and I was concerned about coming to a new company. However, I have found everyone is very willing to give advice and help, and there is always someone around to learn from.”
There are a wide range of projects ongoing at Land & Water and we always want to hear from those interested in joining our team.
We are currently recruiting for a number of roles including Project Managers, Site Managers, Environmental Scientists and Quantity Surveyors.
