A DAY IN THE LIFE OF QUANTITY SURVEYOR LAURIE

Laurie joined the Land & Water team in 2019 because he saw the company’s diverse project portfolio and knew he wanted to get involved.

Working largely on framework projects for the Environment Agency in the south, Laurie’s role as a Quantity Surveyor involves a range of tasks including change management, contract administration, budgeting and commercial reporting on projects. Currently, Laurie is working with the Environment Agency on a few Thames Navigation projects refurbishing its assets along the river such as lock sites, boat moorings, pedestrian bridges and undertaking bank repairs.

“I really enjoy the varied nature of the projects which we are involved in, from wetland habitat creations and flood alleviations to dredging and lock / canal refurbishments”, said Laurie about what he likes most about his role.

Laurie continues, “I feel my own contributions make a genuine difference to the outcomes of a project and to the business as a whole. I have worked for a number of large Tier 1 civil engineering contractors for the majority of my career and find that Land & Water has given me much more flexibility, variety and scope in my work.”

Laurie was also part of the award winning River of Life II project, on behalf of Earth Trust, which was the largest wetland habitat creation project of its kind on the banks of the River Thames and Thame. Laurie helped create 46,000m2 of valuable wetlands which will see the local wildlife thrive and this has become one of his favourite projects to date, saying, “going from standing in a grass meadow to seeing new, interconnected ponds and backwaters in the space of a few months was amazing.”

Land & Water has always been committed towards delivering environmentally focused works and this has provided a great sense of pride for its employees who share the same passion. Laurie said, “Land & Water’s commitment to net zero with the move to HVO fuels and investment in carbon sequestration is admirable, especially given the broader civils industry’s general resistance to change in this area.”

We loved hearing about what Laurie loves most about his role with Land & Water and if you are interested in a position similar to Laurie’s then we have a variety of opportunities available. Click here to find out more: https://www.land-water.co.uk/careers/
